1. Three Things to Know about OpenAI’s DevDay

The biggest news recently was about OpenAI’s DevDay where the organization behind ChatGPT discussed their latest AI advancements.

Here are three main takeaways

1. Customized GPTs

OpenAI announced that they’re rolling out custom versions of GPTs that you can create to help you with specific purposes. Those custom GPTs can be sold on their "GPT Store” (similar to an App Store), which is launching soon. Anyone can create them, so no coding experience is required. This means you can create your own customized GPTs for your team’s tasks (and even sell those on the store). More here.

2. Larger Context Window

GPT-4 Turbo (OpenAI’s new model) has increased its context window from 32k to 128k. This is huge because you can now fit the equivalent of more than 300 pages of text in a single prompt. Here’s a great article explaining context windows and why they’re important.

3. Copyright Shield

If you’re a ChatGPT Enterprise customer, OpenAI will now step in to defend you (and pay any associated costs) if your company faces any legal ramifications about potential copyright infringement. This helps reduce the headache associated with employees using ChatGPT’s output for business use.

What does this mean for leaders?

Those updates by OpenAI are all great and have a number of advantages for leaders, but the biggest takeaway for me is not about any one feature.

It’s the fact that OpenAI is moving much, much faster in its releases than any of its peers.

So as a business leader, you can make a fairly safe bet on OpenAI and its products, especially if you’re worried about quickly getting outdated.

2. Amazon & xAI Investing Heavily in LLMs

Amazon is investing millions of dollars into “Olympus", a Large Language Model (LLM) that will rival OpenAI. This is not 100% official yet, but it looks like it’s happening.

In addition, Elon Musk’s new company, xAI, released a new LLM called Grok. The key differentiator between Grok and other models is that it’s more “rebellious” with fewer guardrails than other competing products.

What does this mean for leaders?

This obviously means more competition in the AI space, which would be great for businesses in general, as this drives prices down and opens up the market for many options.

However, the biggest takeaway here is that investments into generative AI technologies are not stopping, and this just reinforces the point that it’s best to start adopting AI early.
